Pediatric Atopic Dermatitis

Eczema (synonymous with Atopic Dermatitis) The disease, Atopic Dermatitis, is an inflammatory disease that causes itchy, dry, red, broken skin that typically affects the elbows, the backs of knees and the face, but can cover most of the body. There is persistent itching and redness and some will blister, weep or peel.

Eczema is one of the most common, chronic skin diseases and there is no cure. Twenty percent (20%) of all children develop the disease and of those, approximately half (50%) will outgrow it by adolescence. However, the fifty percent (50%) who do not outgrow it by adolescence will have the disease into adulthood. In adulthood, the disease typically worsens and the skin becomes thicker and drier.

The best way to treat this disease is to re-establish the normal skin barrier function and restore moisture to the skin while reducing the inflammation that causes the constant itching, dryness and redness. Although it is a common occurrence for patients to develop a tolerance to many corticosteroids, that has not been the case with DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (BODY OIL) for several reasons:

Because of the spreadibility of this drug's delivery system, very little product is needed to treat widespread areas, so the skin is exposed to minimal amounts of corticosteroid. When applied to moistened skin, the product softens and maintains hydration in the skin each time DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (BODY OIL) is applied. The skin barrier function is restored quickly and the itching, dryness and redness are eliminated within a very short period of time.

My child is allergic to peanuts. Can he use DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (BODY OIL)?

Peanut allergies are not a problem with DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (BODY OIL)! It is well known that it is the protein in peanuts that causes the allergic reaction in peanut-sensitive individuals. DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (BODY OIL) contains refined peanut oil which under routine tests for protein levels, do not show any protein. Studies conducted at Chicago Children's Hospital and at The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota confirm that DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (BODY OIL) is safe for peanut sensitive individuals.

How long will one DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (BODY OIL) last me?

This will, of course, vary depending on the size of the patient and the percentage of body surface being treated. Patients enrolled in the clinical studies had symptoms of the disease (itchy, dry, inflamed, red skin), on the average, over 75% of their bodies. Some had as much as 95% involvement. These patients used one to two bottles of DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (BODY OIL) over a 4-week period of time to eliminate the symptoms.

Who should not use DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (BODY OIL)?

Do not use this product if you have a history of allergic reaction to any of the ingredients of this product. The ingredients are listed on the bottle and the box.

My child's skin is so broken and irritated, he doesn't like to be touched. Will this product burn?

DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (BODY OIL) is soothing to the skin. Wetting the skin with water before applying the oil will greatly reduce the possibility of experiencing a burning sensation.

Will my insurance cover this product?

DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (BODY OIL) must be covered by insurance plans. DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (BODY OIL) is the only corticosteroid shown not to cause adrenal suppression in children. DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (BODY OIL) is medically necessary whenever it is prescribed. There is no generic or therapeutic equivalent. DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (BODY OIL) is the only corticosteroid product approved by Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of widespread (>20% to 95% body surface area) Atopic Dermatitis/Eczema in children age 3 months through adults. It has been proven safe and effective for patients with major involvement. There is no therapeutic substitution or generic equivalent.

I do not have insurance. How much can I expect to pay for one DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (BODY OIL)?

If you are paying out of pocket (without insurance), you can expect to pay approximately $39.00 - $45.00 for one, 4oz. bottle of DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (BODY OIL). In clinical trials, one bottle of DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (BODY OIL) was usually sufficient to eliminate a patient’s symptoms in severe cases where anywhere from 50% to 90% of the body was involved. Usage will vary from person to person, depending on the size of the person and the amount of the body surface area that is being treated.
