Q. Why will DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (SCALP OIL) work on my scalp when nothing else has?

A. The key to treating scalp Psoriasis is to eliminate the crust and scale gently, add moisture to the entire scalp, and deliver a low -potency corticosteroid to reduce the inflammation, thereby eliminating the itch and redness. The patient with scalp Psoriasis presents with a greatly thickened layer of the epidermis, what we see as scale and plaque, which is in part due to the inflammatory nature of the disease. DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (SCALP OIL), by virtue of its peanut oil vehicle, is easily spread on the scalp and softens the thickened skin layer as well as enhances delivery and release of the steroid to the skin. Subsequently, the outer most part of the thickened epidermis sloughs off and inflammation is controlled, resulting in a healthy, clear scalp. Every patient can expect the results pictured below.

Q. How do I use DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (SCALP OIL)?

A. For the treatment of scalp Psoriasis, wet scalp thoroughly with water. Apply a thin film of DERMA- SMOOTHE/FS® (SCALP OIL), massage well and cover scalp with the shower cap contained in the package. Leave on for a minimum of 4 hours or overnight before washing off. Shampoo with a non- medicated shampoo and rinse thoroughly. Repeat daily until desired results are obtained. In FDA clinical studies, 81% of patients experienced good (50%) to complete clearing (100%) within 1 to 3 weeks of daily use.

Q. I am using several products on my scalp, trying to clear it up. Should I continue to use them while using DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (SCALP OIL)?

A. We recommend using DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (SCALP OIL) alone. The above pictured results were obtained by using DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (SCALP OIL) by itself in the following manner: Wet the scalp thoroughly with water. Apply a thin film of DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (SCALP OIL) to the entire scalp, massage well and cover scalp with the shower cap contained in the package. Leave on for a minimum of 4 hours or overnight. Q. I use hair color. Will DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (SCALP OIL) affect the color?

A. DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (SCALP OIL) will not affect permanent hair color, hair permanents or hair relaxers. We recommend you do not apply any cosmetic dyes, perms or relaxers until your scalp is normal and symptom free.

Q. I have gray hair. Products I have used in the past for Psoriasis have turned my hair a yellow/brown. Will my hair color change with DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (SCALP OIL)?

A. DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (SCALP OIL) does not contain ingredients that would affect hair color.

Q. Can I perm (or relax) my hair while using DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (SCALP OIL)?

Q. I have a permanent. Will DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (SCALP OIL) relax my hair?

Q. I am African-American and cannot manage my hair if I wash it every day. How should I apply the product?

A. For most patients, best results are achieved when patients apply DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (SCALP OIL) to a wet scalp, cover head with the supplied shower cap and leave it on for a minimum of 4 hours; then wash it out. If washing your hair daily is not advisable you may use DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (SCALP OIL) as follows:

Wash your hair
While your hair is still wet, apply DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (SCALP OIL) to the entire scalp and massage it in. Style your hair as usual.
Reapply DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (SCALP OIL) once a day until the next washing.
Continue daily applications of DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (SCALP OIL) until crusts and scales are gone. If problems return, use as directed by health care provider.

Q. Will I develop a tolerance to DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (SCALP OIL)?

A. Patients have not complained of this problem with DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS (SCALP OIL). The corticosteroid is very mild and the vehicle (peanut oil) is an excellent moisturizer.

Q. What are the possible side effects of DERMA-SMOOTHE/FS® (SCALP OIL)?

A. The following are some local reactions reported infrequently with use of topical steroids: inflammation, burning, itching, irritation, dryness, infection of hair follicle, acne, allergic skin reaction, skin infection, skin thinning and stretch marks.
